The lost Ladybug Project was started in 2000. It consisted of two groups, one was a group of Cornell university researchers and the other group was the 4-H Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners that were surveying ladybug populations all over New York State. (4.)
In 2004 the first field tests were in place with a handful of students from elementary schools in New York State. 20066 was a big year for the project as a group of children found a rare and thought to be extinct nine-spotted ladybug. This ladybug had not been seen in 14 years in the Eastern Part of North America. In 2008 with the help of a National grant they were funded to educate and survey populations of ladybugs in unison with researchers in the fields of entomology. 32,321 ladybugs have been tracked to date. Lyrics :
Let's go find a ladybug
They live in gardens, weeds, and shrubs
There are 5000 species worldwide
The number of spots identifies the kind
Ladybugs are beetles with six legs
Ladybugs can be yellow, orange, pink, brown, black, white, blue or red
Ladybug, ladybug, ladybu-u-ug
Ladybugs have two sets of wings
Antennae help them smell, touch, and taste things
Ladybugs chew from side to side
If it's cold or dark, they might not fly
Ladybugs roll over and play dead
Ladybugs release a chemical that tastes terrible in self-defense
Ladybugs have important jobs
Eating aphids that destroy our crops
We need lots of different kinds
But some species are now hard to find
Ladybugs, they need us to conserve
Ladybugs, we will protect your habitats and take care of the Earth
